spray foam insulation missionInsulation is added to buildings for comfort and for energy efficiency. It works by slowing the heat flow within the building envelope of a structure. Proper insulation of homes and offices reduces the cost of heating and cooling.

To better understand how insulation works, it is important to also understand the concept of heat flow, which has three mechanisms. The first is conduction, the way heat moves through materials. It is the transfer of heat from particle to particle within the same substance. The second is convection, the transfer of heat by the movement of the warmed substance. It is the process through which heat circulates through liquids and gases. The third is radiation, which travels in a straight line and heats anything along its way.

Insulation materials slow conductive and convective heat flow. Reflective insulation materials, on the other hand, work by reducing heat gain from radiation.

There are factors that need to be considered if you plan to insulate your home.

First, where to install or add the insulation; second, what are the recommended R-values for the area you want to insulate.

(R-value refers to the measure of thermal resistance used in the building and construction industry.)

There are also different types of insulation materials to choose from.

  • Blanket Insulation
  • Concrete Block Insulation
  • Foam Board
  • Insulating Concrete Forms
  • Loose-Fill and Blown-In Insulation
  • Radiant Barrier or Reflective Insulation
  • Rigid Fiber Board Insulation
  • Sprayed Foam and Foam-In-Place Insulation
  • Structural Insulated Panels

Spray Foam Insulation offers an alternative to the traditional use of fiberglass. A component mixture is used to spray onto roof tile, concrete and even wall cavities.

Sprayed insulation protects buildings from moisture, and reduces the chance for growth of harmful mold and mildew, which can lead to allergic reactions.

Studies conducted by the United States of America’s Department of Energy show that 40 percent of the energy in a home is lost because of air infiltration. Using spray foam insulation is encouraged to save on energy cost and to lower utility bills on electricity.

Perhaps the common type of this method is the use of polyurethane.
